Very impressed! Awesome TV!,
I have had this TV for about three weeks now, and I am very impressed. The features are very comprehensive with internet capabilities that not only includes Netflix and Vudu, but also Yahoo Widgets. And every time you enter its internet capabilities, it makes a quick check for updates, so it should be easy to pick up enhancements if/when LG introduces them in the future. The TV comes with two remotes, one of which has a motion sensor (think Wii) so when you wave it in the air it moves a cursor around over menus on the screen. I think that’s a great concept and it works well for basic menu function. The USB port reads external hard disks with all of the different content I have thrown at it without any problems, and it has a great interface for navigating the folders.
The picture quality is excellent as compared to the 65 inch 1080P Mitsubishi I replaced, but also as compared to the other 6 TVs in my house. Nothing beats the last generation plasma screens in brilliance and contrast. I actually still find myself starring in amazement at the quality of the picture while watching shows. The 3D features are much more than just a gimmick. I have four 3D movies, of which “A Christmas Carol”, “The Grand Canyon”, and “Under the Sea” are absolutely spectacular. The latter is provided free with the BX580 3D Blu-ray player after sending in a coupon (I received it in the mail after about two weeks). I wear eye glasses when watching TV, and I was concerned that it would be a hassle to have the 3D glasses “on top” of those, but the 3D effect is good enough to make it worthwhile.
The sound quality of the TV is what you would expect, but isn’t of much interest to me since I have it hooked up to a Pioneer VSX-1020 amplifier. Sure sounds great through the amplifier and my Harman Kardon speakers. One item of some concern, however, is that the “HDMI-CEC” (or LG’s Simplink) doesn’t work quite the way it should with that amplifier and I am not able to fully control the receiver through HDMI. However, using a Harmony remote provides much of the same capabilities.
Mounting a 60 inch plasma is not an easy job (it is heavy, and not easy to lift – even for two people), but it sure pays off with the way this TV looks! It doesn’t have a frame in the normal sense. Just one large glass panel. And it looks great – very clean and almost decadent. I used the Simplicity SXDP4 for the mount and it gets it as close to the wall as possible for this TV if you get angled plugs (HDMI, Toslink, and Coax – the last two are only needed if you get over-the-air broadcast), and an Ethernet cable with a very short plug. It’s a tight fit, but it looks fantastic!
This TV is excellent in almost every way and highly recommended! I would buy it again in a heartbeat!
**** UPDATE **** I have recently discovered that the audio output (e.g. from the optical out cable) from Netcast (e.g. Vudu, NextFlix, etc.) on this TV is only 2.1, which makes those pay services useless for any serious home theater viewing with this TV (I will instead need to use my LG blu-ray, which is also equipped with Netcast and with true surround sound output). Therefore, I reduced my rating by one star. I sure hope a firmware upgrade can fix this in the future, and that such an upgrade is possible. If you bought the TV and the lack of surround sound from Netcast bothers you, let LG know!
**** UPDATE #2 **** Apparently, LG listened! This evening the TV found new firmware and updated itself, and I am now getting Dolby 5.1 surround sound from Vudu!!! I no longer have any complaints about this TV, and I have now had it for almost two months.

|Beautiful picture!!,
This review is simply my first impressions of the LG 60PX950. I researched this TV to the point of obsession over the last month. My initial intention was to purchase a 55″ LCD with local dimming LED backlighting. When I started my research my thoughts were that Plasma TVs were past their prime and LCD has surpassed them in terms of image quality. However, the more I read, the more I became convinced that this was far from true (especially in regard to the black levels) and that Plasmas were more than just alive and well, they still reigned supreme in the eyes of home theater aficionados. So, I decided Plasma was the way to go… this decision leaves one with relatively little to pick from; pretty much just Panasonic, Samsung, and LG since Pioneer and Sony seemingly abandoned the plasma market. I was initially sold on Samsung as it is somewhat price comparable to LG and Panasonic seems to be over priced, however, the recurring stories of buzzing from the Samsung screen scared me off. The 60PX950 had no reviews through all of October and November and only one or two during December. However, all indications were that the 60PX950 was for all intents the same identical TV as the 60PK950, but with 3D added… and all of the reviews of the PK indicated that this was indeed a fine unit. I see that Consumer Reports is currently working on a thorough review of this unit as well. I finally pulled the trigger in late December after seeing a bit of price droop following the Thanksgiving Black Friday sales. Another thing I concluded from all of my research was that if buying online that buying through Amazon was a wise decision in order to get their A-Z guarantee… this seemed especially important after reading BBB reports for some of the other low price on line retailers.
I bought this TV through Amazon from the NetRush store and the buying experience thus far has been excellent. The item was shipped quickly through Seko Worldwide and the box arrived without a scratch and damage free.
On arrival the TV was unpacked and inspected, then set up and connected it to the my Cox HD DVR cable box, LG BX580 Blu-Ray player. Unexpectedly, the TV came with a wireless network adapter. I didn’t use this item, however, as my internet router was located close enough to allow a hardwire connection. The TV was connected to the internet and quickly updated its firmware automatically. After a little playing with the controllers to get the picture tuned for color temperature, brightness etc, I had it set up on the floor next to the original TV it was replacing (a seven year old 57″ Hitachi rear projection CRT unit) that really still had a pretty good picture…or so I thought. This side by side comparison was really mind blowing… the clarity and crispness of the LG 60PX950 was simply astounding. I was seeing details I never even realized were there. This was most notable when viewing the LG Blueray player Netcast menu (where you can switch between the likes of Pandora, Netflix, etc).
One item of note that I first thought was the TV, when connecting to the older Cox cable box (a Scientific Atlanta SA 8240HDC HD DVR) with HDMI, I have experienced a lot of black screen flashes, where the screen blinks black for a fraction of a second at random intervals. This is apparently not the TV, but is related to a problem with the Cox DVR and may drive me to have to reconnect using component video rather than HDMI. I will update this in the future if I learn more.
While I purchased a couple pairs of the LG AS100 3D Glasses, I have not yet tried them with a Blu-Ray 3D movie. I have watched a few cable and network television shows, as well as a couple of Netflix movies and one conventional (non-Blueray) movie. All content has been just beautiful on this display the color depth and black levels as compared to my old CRT rear projection are simply amazing.
I will note that the 60PX950 with its glass screen makes for a nice mirror in a sun lit room… when turned off that is. When the TV is turned on and when sitting more or less directly in front of the TV, reflections seem to melt away. In a dimmed room or at night reflections seem to be non-existent. Off axis viewing, as expected for a plasma screen, is excellent, certainly far superior to the older CRT rear projection and much better than my one year old 36″ Vizio.
All for now… I’ll add to this later as I gain more experience with the set…

|Great picture and value,
I researched this purchase for weeks, considering LCD, LED and Plasma. I went into the seach thinking I’d go with LED if I could afford it, but thought plasma was outdated. What I found is plasma still has the best picture and significantly best price. It tends to be a bit thicker and heavier, but that wasn’t a concern for me…and this is only 2 inches thick. Plasma has deeper blacks but some models aren’t great for rooms with lots of light – this model ranks very high for high ambient light and does great in my room, which has 10 skylights and a 25 foot wall of windows. The entire front of the TV is covered with a pane of glass (unlike LCD and LED); again, this is another concern with plasmas in high light rooms but I don’t really notice the reflections. This has a filter (Tru-Black or something like that) that helps with both situations.
The picture is incredible. Little things like the individual grass blades during a football game and the tiny details in a person’s face make for a more enjoyable experience – like you’re there. I haven’t purchased the 3D glasses yet, but at this price it’s almost like you’re getting that feature for free. I have little kids, so I’ll probably hold off a few years but at least I’m future compatible now.
This also comes bundled with the LG USB WiFi adaptor, which was a surprise. Very easy to setup and brought down a firmware update without hassle. I’ve also used it to watch YouTube, but haven’t tried NetFlix or Vudu yet.
There is a review on CNET that calls this one of the best plasmas of 2010; from my research and now personal experience, I’d agree.
When I purchased this through Amazon the price was $1,700 + 5.50 S/H. The guys who delivered it, from across the country in 3-4 days, carried it off the truck and into my house. Very happy with the price and the delivery. This was offered by Paul’s TV, through Amazon, so maybe the price will go back down if they start offering it again.
